Bazaar introduction | Bazaar rules | Features passed in | Features sold

This document was distributed to all conference delegates before the event

How the Bazaar Works

  • Simon Bishop from Squiz will chair this group event between 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm as per the conference agenda.
  • Simon will walk all users through the rules of the event and run one dummy sale to explain the rules to everyone.
  • Simon will set the nomination reserve (initially $1,000) before starting the Bazaar by asking for a feature nomination.
  • Simon may reset the nomination reserve at any time during the Bazaar.

Nominating a Feature for Sale

  • Any delegate may nominate a feature by raising their hand agreeing to spend the nomination reserve when Simon calls for nominations.
  • Simon will choose the delegate he believes put their hand up first or someone who has not already made a nomination and ask them which feature they wish to nominate.
  • A delegate may nominate any feature that has not already been purchased. In other words they may nominate a feature that has previously been passed in.
  • The delegate will specify the feature by quoting its numeric ID and Simon will confirm the feature by reading out the title and description of the feature.
  • Simon will then open the bidding.

Bidding

  • Simon (with support from the nominator) will ask the floor for bids in order to raise enough money to pay the feature = a sale. If they do not raise enough money the item is passed in.
  • A bid is made when a delegate raises their hand and states how much money they are willing to contribute to the development (this will be recorded by a Squiz representative).
  • A bid may be any value in lots of $100 (SquizDollars come in $100 notes) but not more than the amount of money a delegate has remaining.
  • If enough money is bid to pay for a feature (prices are listed on the feature sheet) a Squiz representative will collect the money from all bidders and the item will be deemed sold. NB they will only collect enough to make the sale, not more.
  • If Simon cannot raise enough money to sell within a reasonable time-frame then it will be passed in and no money will be collected from any bidders or the nominator.
  • After an item is sold or passed in, Simon will repeat the process by calling for nominations until the Bazaar closes.

Finishing the Bazaar

  • The Bazaar closes either when no more features are being purchased or at 3:30 sharp, whichever happens first.
  • Simon will declare the event closed and any unspent SquizDollars will be immediately void.

Other Important Information

There are a lot of features for sale so there will not be enough time to explain each in detail at the Bazaar. Instead Squiz have provided a written list of all the features for sale and a brief description for each (see below). We strongly encourage you to read this list carefully then note the features you are interested in before attending the Bazaar.

Some of the features are very specialised and may only be relevant to some users in your organisation. We encourage you to send this list to others in your organisation before attending the Bazaar so they can have a chance to tell you what is important to them.

If you have any questions regarding these features, Squiz will ensure sure staff are available to talk to you between 8:45 and 9:30 am and again during lunch on Friday before the Bazaar.

Questions

Q. Why would I want to nominate a feature?

A. There are a few reasons:

  • If you want the feature it’s the best way to ensure someone buys it.
  • The longer you wait the greater the chance that others will not have enough money to buy your item. Remember they could be saving some of their money for specific features they’re keen on.
  • You get the nomination fee back if the item is not sold.
  • If you want an expensive feature you should certainly nominate it as soon as possible – before others have spent all their money.

Q. Why should I bid?

A. Again, there are a few reasons:

  • If an item is passed in nobody else may nominate it later in which case you will be up for the nomination fee if you really want the feature.
  • If the item is renominated other interested bidders may have already spent their money on other features so they will not have enough money to fund the feature.
  • You can’t take the money home! If you have not spent it before the end of the auction its void so there is no point being greedy.

Q. Can delegates use real money or support pack time to pay for features?

A. No. Of course development can be discussed after the conference.
