Simple Edit Interface

Last Updated: 17 Dec 2015

The Simple Edit Interface offers a restricted set of functionality, as it provides an interface for people with little or no Squiz Matrix training to update content on a single page at a time.

By default, you can perform the following tasks in the Simple Edit Interface:

  • Edit the content of a Standard Page using the WYSIWYG Editor
  • Insert hyperlinks to internal assets and external URLs, and embed movies and images
  • Use the menu navigation of the Site to edit other Standard Pages

The Simple Edit Interface provides a restricted set of functionality. For example, you cannot navigate via the Asset Map to other assets or load new files.

A System Administrator can customise the Simple Edit Interface via a Layout to allow users to perform many other additional tasks, for example:

  • Change the name and short name of an asset
  • Schedule publication of content
  • Edit metadata
  • Make approvals for workflows

If a System Administrator has customised the Simple Edit Interface via a Layout, the Simple Edit Interface will include additional fields, for example, the name fields or the Status fields that appear on the Details screen of the Standard Page asset within the Administration Interface.

Accessing the Simple Edit Interface

You can access the Simple Edit Interface by appending _edit to the URL of an asset, like so:

http://www.example.com/site/_edit

The Simple Edit Interface

The Simple Edit Interface is shown in the figure below.

The look of this interface will depend on the Design that has been applied to the page. The default sections of the Simple Edit Interface are the tool bar at the top, the Asset Map side bar on the left hand side and the Contents area with the Commit button. All other areas shown in the figure above will depend on your Design.

Tip: You can choose to hide the tool bar and Asset Map frames using the No frames in Simple Edit Interface field on the Details screen of your Design. For more information, refer to the Design Asset chapter in the Designs manual.

To navigate through the Site, you can use the menu navigation within your Design. As you navigate through, you will be able to edit the contents of the page in the Simple Edit Interface. If another user is already editing that page, you will not be able to change the content of the page until they are finished with it.

Tip: To navigate to pages within the Site that are not accessible from the menu, type in the URL of the page into the address field of the browser, and append the _edit suffix.

When you view other pages in the Simple Edit Interface that are not Standard Page, you will be taken to the Details screen for that page type.

Editing the Content of a Page

To edit the properties of a division, click on the Table properties icon icon. For more information on how to add, edit and remove a division, refer to the Page Contents and Divisions chapter in this manual.

To edit the contents of a division, click on the edit icon icon. The fields for the content type of the division will appear. For example, if the content type of the division is the WYSIWYG Editor, it will appear on the Edit Contents screen, as shown in the figure below. For more information about each of the content types, refer to the Content Types manual.

The Asset Map is available in the Simple Edit Interface but is only used if you need to select an asset to use – you cannot use the Asset Map to add new assets, delete assets or navigate around your Site. For example, if you have an Image content type on the page, to be able to select which Image to use, you need the Asset Map.

Click on the white arrow in the side bar on the left hand side of the screen, as shown in the figure to the right.

The Asset Map will appear, as shown in the figure below.
